Sports Medicine

From high quality diagnostics to cutting edge treatments, our team of veterinarians is here to help your horse perform at his or her best.

Lameness Evaluations

A comprehensive lameness evaluation includes examination of all four limbs including special focus of the distal limb and hoof.  Horses are evaluated through their gaits often on varied surfaces and under saddle as appropriate.  Our veterinarians flex joints and perform nerve blocks as necessary to target the location of the lameness.  Once the region of origin of the lameness has been narrowed, it is often necessary to obtain radiographs or ultrasound imaging to identify the inciting cause of lameness and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Extracorporeal Shockwave
Shockwave is often incorporated as part of the treatment plan for soft tissue injuries and can be used in conjunction with regenerative therapy such as PRP.  Horses are lightly sedated and typically are not bothered by the noise or impact of the therapeutic shockwaves administered.  Treatment protocols are developed based on the injuries of the individual horse.

In-House Biologic Therapies
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an autologous regenerative blood product which is harvested from your individual horse’s blood using sterile collection and processing techniques.  PRP is used most often in the treatment of tendon and ligament tears to help provide a scaffolding on which fibers can redevelop.

Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein (IRAP) is an autologous anti-inflammatory blood product which is harvested from your individual horse’s blood using sterile collection and processing techniques.  IRAP is a natural ant-inflammatory and is most often injected directly into joints to provide relief from inflammation.
